Can I still apply for the K-STAR Visa if my graduation is delayed by one semester?

I am currently enrolled in a master’s program in a science and engineering field at a university in Korea and hold a D-2 student visa. I was originally expected to graduate this semester, but due to my research schedule, I may need to extend my program by one semester. After graduation, I would like to continue my career in Korea, either through employment or research, so I am considering applying for the K-STAR Visa (F-2-7S). I understand that students who are expected to graduate may also be eligible for the K-STAR Visa. Would delaying my graduation by one semester affect my eligibility? I would also like to know whether I can apply even if I have not yet secured a job.

Unlike the general points-based resident visa, one of the most important factors for the K-STAR Visa is whether the applicant qualifies for a recommendation from an eligible university, rather than whether the applicant has already secured employment. Therefore, delaying your graduation by one semester does not automatically make you ineligible. However, for master’s students, the timing is important because you generally need to meet the university’s criteria as an expected graduate or fall within the applicable period after obtaining your degree. If your graduation date changes, the timing of your university recommendation may also need to be adjusted. For example, if you initially applied for a university recommendation as a student expected to graduate this semester but your graduation is later postponed to the following semester, you should check again with the university office responsible for the K-STAR program to determine whether your existing recommendation process can continue. Another key feature of the K-STAR Visa is that an applicant may be considered for F-2-7S through a university president’s recommendation even if employment has not yet been secured. However, meeting the basic eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee a recommendation, as each university has its own recommendation procedures. Therefore, you should first confirm your university’s K-STAR recommendation schedule and whether you will still be regarded as an expected graduate for the current round. If your delayed graduation means that you are no longer eligible for the current recommendation period, it would be safer to prepare for the university’s next recommendation round.
