I have noticed that some university labs have many industry-funded projects while others have very few. Apart from the language barrier, do you know how professors typically find or obtain these projects? Is there any platform where companies announce university–industry research opportunities, or are most projects initiated through personal networks and existing collaborations?

Industry-funded projects are indeed obtained through both formal calls and personal networks. Professors generally also find such project opportunities through their respective university’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. The purpose of this foundation is to make connections between researchers and companies. You can go through the IRIS (Inter-agency Integrated Research Support System) sites, where government-supported university-industry projects are publicly announced.
