Is it better to demonstrate the ability to teach fundamental concepts very clearly? or would including a more recent/advanced topic be viewed more favorably?

If the broad subject of the mock lecture is already fixed(e.g., a control lecture for first-year undergraduate student), how would you recommend selecting the actual topic? Is it better to demonstrate the ability to teach fundamental concepts very clearly? or would including a more recent/advanced topic be viewed more favorably?

I would recommend that you select a fundamental concept rather than choosing an advanced topic. The selection committee for faculty interviews mostly evaluates the applicant’s ability to engage students, explain difficult ideas at the appropriate level, check their understanding of the topics, and use effective examples.
