As a new graduate student at GIST, I wish I had started learning everyday Korean before coming to Korea. My Korean is still at a beginner level, and I often need help understanding messages and everyday conversations. This has made me realise that preparing for life outside the lab is also an important part of studying abroad. My advice to incoming students is to learn useful phrases for transport, ordering food, and asking for help, even if their academic work is mainly in English. Keeping a small list of practical phrases on your phone is a simple way to get started!
