You mentioned that there should be a clear connection between an applicant’s past achievements and future research direction. How strict is this expectation? For example, would it be difficult for someone whose previous research was mainly in vehicle/powertrain control to propose a future research direction involving robotics, provided that there is a reasonable methodological connection?

It’s not that strict that the applicant should follow the same research topic for his/her future research. However, in general, the proposed research direction should logically develop from their demonstrated expertise.

In the applicant’s case, a shift from vehicle/powertrain control to robotics can be realistic and convincing, as both research fields have a few similarities. The applicant should systematically state the research methodology, requirements for facilities, ongoing projects, collaborations, funding opportunities, and expected outcomes.

Is it better to demonstrate the ability to teach fundamental concepts very clearly? or would including a more recent/advanced topic be viewed more favorably?
