What studying in Korea for one year has taught me

Studying in South Korea was really a surprise in terms of teaching methods, class format, and evaluation criteria. I was impressed at how much autonomy is expected from the students. Indeed, personal study is expected to be as much as lecture time. With the theoretical content given in the lectures, one should appropriate himself/herself to the concepts and be able to apply them to complex cases during assignments, projects, or exams. I was used to doing some exercises in class with the professors too before being asked to do it by myself. The two approaches may lead to the same result, but the Korean one really builds autonomy and the capacity to understand on your own the class. Furthermore, in this system, I felt that a larger gap might appear between the students who really invest in the course and those who study just the minimum required. In addition, whereas my home university really focuses on case studies and internships, studying in South Korea felt more oriented towards research. I was glad to discover this new field as it allows students to invest in topics in which they are really interested rather than generic topics. However, I am more concerned about how Korean students get prepared for company employment.
