Be a Philosopher & Entrepreneur Too, Not Just a Researcher
Research is just a fancy term for searching more than once. What matters more for a researcher is being a philosopher in your area of expertise: the ability to think about a subject from more than one perspective. Most of the time, researchers focus only on the work in their own lab: publishing papers and writing project proposals. But we should also think about the practical consequences of our research and the current state of our field. We should look beyond our lab and ask: Who pioneered this field? How did it all start? What is happening on the commercialization side? Who are the active players, and what kind of funding are others in similar fields receiving? Don’t focus only on the research itself. Think about how a research idea can become a product, and whether it could be the basis for a great startup. Don’t limit your talent to writing high-impact papers. There is more to research than that. I have attached two great papers on this topic. I highly recommend giving them a read.
