What I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Research Journey in Korea
When I first came to Korea as an international graduate student, I thought that academic performance and research skills would be the most important things for building a successful career. However, I gradually realized that understanding Korean culture, learning the language, and building good relationships with professors and colleagues are equally important. One thing I wish I had known earlier is that learning Korean from the beginning can make everyday life much easier. Even basic Korean helps when communicating with university administration, handling housing issues, visiting hospitals, and interacting with local people. Another important lesson is to communicate regularly with your professor and research colleagues. Don't hesitate to ask questions, discuss research problems, or seek guidance. Building professional relationships and participating in academic activities can open valuable opportunities. I also recommend that international students learn about visa regulations, scholarships, university support services, and career opportunities as early as possible. My advice to new international researchers is simple: don't focus only on your research. Invest in your language skills, personal development, networking, and understanding Korean society. These things will make your journey in Korea much smoother and more rewarding.
