Before coming to Korea, I imagined my student life would be exciting and beautiful. I thought I would make new friends, enjoy Korean culture, study hard, and have many unforgettable experiences. And yes, some of my expectations came true. But there was another side of student life that I was not ready for. Expectation: “I know Korean, so university classes won’t be too difficult.” Reality: During my first lectures, I realized that understanding everyday Korean and understanding university lectures are completely different things. Sometimes, I could understand individual words but not the main idea. While Korean students were taking notes, I was still trying to understand what the professor had just explained. Expectation: “Group projects will help me make friends.” Reality: Group projects were sometimes more stressful than exams. I had ideas, but explaining them in Korean was not always easy. Sometimes, I worried that my classmates might misunderstand me or think I was not contributing enough. I learned that communication is not only about speaking perfectly. It is also about listening, asking questions, and showing that you are trying. Expectation: “If I study hard, everything will be fine.” Reality: Studying hard is important, but studying in another language requires extra time and energy. Sometimes, one reading assignment took me much longer than I expected. I had to translate unfamiliar words, read the same paragraph several times, and prepare for presentations while managing my daily responsibilities. There were moments when I felt tired and wondered, “Am I doing enough?” But slowly, I understood something important. I was comparing my progress with people who were studying in their native language. That was not a fair comparison. Looking back, here is what I wish someone had told me before I started university in Korea: 🌱 Don’t expect yourself to understand everything from the beginning. 🌱 Ask questions, even when you think they sound simple. 🌱 Learn academic Korean, not only everyday Korean. 🌱 Don’t stay silent during group projects just because you are afraid of making mistakes. 🌱 Give yourself time to adapt. Everyone has a different journey. Today, I still face challenges. I still make mistakes, and sometimes I still struggle to express my thoughts. But I no longer see every mistake as a failure. My biggest lesson? Studying abroad is not always as beautiful as it looks on social media. Behind the photos, there are difficult lectures, stressful exams, lonely moments, and many small challenges that nobody sees. But there is also growth, independence, confidence, and the happiness of realizing that something which was difficult yesterday is easier today. If you are a new international student, remember: you don’t have to be perfect to belong here. You just have to keep going. 🌷
